St. Mary Aldermary Church
A Very Good Detour
Heading back to Hazlitt’s, we stopped at St. Mary Aldermary’s Church for lunch at The Host Cafe. It was one of those delightful travel discoveries that you don’t plan for but are very glad you made.
The church offers a light breakfast / lunch as a fundraiser for the local community and the church, for the business folk who work nearby. We were happy to support the cause, particularly when croissants, coffee and cake were involved.
We decided not to question whether they technically counted as lunch when traveling, one has to be flexible!

“…No explanation needed”
The Americano was another matter entirely. That was less of a treat and more of a necessity. After all the walking, we reached the stage where caffeine was no longer a beverage choice.
Like a camera, it was essential equipment.

St. Mary’s is renowned for its extraordinary fan-vaulted ceiling, and stepping inside, my attention immediately went upwards.

The craftsmanship is remarkable.

I could have stayed much longer, but eventually we had to tear ourselves away and continue back to Hazlitt’s.
It was a lovely detour: a beautiful old church, an extraordinary piece of architecture, croissants, cake and a much-needed coffee. Not a bad way to spend part of an afternoon in London
And once again, we were reminded that when wandering around Europe..
It pays to look up—and occasionally to stop for cake and coffee.
