Sir John Soane’s Museum

A HOUSE BUILT FOR DISCOVERY

With hours before check-in, we went looking for another piece of old London.

We found it in the former home of famed London architect, Sir John Soane.

Sir. John Soane’s Museum house is almost overwhelming. Rooms lead into rooms. Narrow passages disappear around corners. Sculpture, paintings, architectural fragments and antiquities occupy nearly every available surface.

A shaft of light.

A doorway framing another room.

The curve of a ceiling.

A fragment of sculpture.

The geometry of a staircase.

The accidental relationship between objects collected centuries apart. The following photographs are impressions of Soane’s world — architecture, light, shadow and the extraordinary accumulation of objects within his home.

There is little empty space.

And yet, within that visual abundance, there are countless photographs.

The curiosity of a staircase.

Where does it lead.

Soane designed spaces to surprise the eye.

We simply tried to follow it with a camera
