The Manor
Finding new accommodations on the spur of the moment
Our plans for Clifden changed almost as quickly as the light can change along the Connemara coast.
As we prepared to leave Veldons’ Seafood yesterday, I decided to make one last check on our accommodation for the coming nights. What followed was one of those travel moments that can turn an ordinary afternoon into an unexpected adventure.
An alarming message from our host appeared:
“We had a water emergency this morning, and a burst water main flooded the property. Unfortunately, we have to cancel your reservation.”
Not exactly the message you want to receive when you are already on the road.
Knowing that Connemara is a major destination and that finding last-minute accommodation can be difficult, I immediately opened the Airbnb app and began searching. After looking through a number of possibilities, I found an apartment on The Sky Road, overlooking Clifden Bay. The location looked promising.

I immediately requested four nights and sent Eileen a message explaining that our previous reservation had been cancelled this morning and that we were desperately looking for somewhere to stay.
Then we waited.
Still sitting at Veldons’, Guinness in hand, we were beginning to wonder whether we had been too optimistic when I received a text. It was Eileen.
“Why was your reservation cancelled?”
I explained the water emergency and our sudden need for accommodation.
Her response was almost unbelievable.
“You are in luck! We had finished with our rentals for the year, and just by chance I saw your request.”

Sometimes travel has a way of rescuing you at exactly the right moment.
We Were In
Our plans for the day had included a visit to Kylemore Abbey, but at that moment, finding a place to sleep was considerably more important. Eileen told us the apartment would be ready at 4:00, and we agreed to meet her then.
There was just enough time to make a quick stop in Letterfrack, where we found a small grocery store next to Veldons and picked up a few provisions for breakfast.
At precisely 4:00 we arrived at The Manor.
Eileen greeted us in the driveway, and within moments we were being shown into the terrace-level apartment. What had begun as a travel-day crisis was quickly turning into a very pleasant surprise.

The apartment was exceptionally spacious. The main living area combined the kitchen, dining space, and sitting room into one beautifully appointed room, while the bedroom was equally generous in size.

But it was the view that immediately captured our attention.

From the front of the apartment, Clifden Bay stretched out before us, framed by the rugged landscape of Connemara. This was the kind of view that makes you stop unpacking, reach for the camera, and start looking for the best light, the optimum angle.

And then there was the location.
The apartment was only about two kilometers from Clifden, yet it felt wonderfully removed from the town. We were close enough to drive into Clifden whenever we wanted, but far enough away to enjoy the landscape, the quiet, and that unmistakable feeling of being on the edge of the Atlantic.

The Sky Road is renowned as one of Ireland’s great scenic drives. From our new home, we had a front-row seat to the landscape that makes this part of Connemara so compelling.

What began with a cancelled reservation and a little panic had ended with something much better—a beautiful place to stay, an unexpected view, and another photographic opportunity we never could have planned.
Sometimes the best travel photographs—and the best travel stories—begin with plans going completely wrong.
